Tea Tree Oil

Tea Tree OilTea tree oil is commonly referenced as a natural remedy for bacterial vaginosis. It’s an essential oil that has been around for 60 years, and is used as an anti-fungal, antibacterial, and antiviral. It can be effectively applied as a remedy against acne, blackheads, and many other skin conditions.

Tea tree oil cleanses and soothes, and is able to reach the lowest skin layers. It’s great for killing bacteria and works for many infections that are resistant to antibiotics. If antibiotics have not worked for you, then trying tea tree oil for bacterial vaginosis might be a good idea.

Studies have found that tea tree oil does eliminate yeast and bacteria. However, there is currently some debate as to whether it can relied upon as an effective treatment for bacterial vaginosis. There are women out there who have said that it worked for them. It can at the very least provide relief from symptoms such as itching.

The side effects are minimal as long as you use it the right way.If used as a treatment, this essential oil must be mixed with a carrier oil. It’s applied to the vagina as a suppository.

It can be purchased at a health and food store in your area, or can be made on your own using a gel capsule consisting of 1/3 tea tree oil and 2/3 vitamin E.

Try using it for 6 weeks at a time with other natural remedies as well, as typically one remedy won’t be enough to make a significant difference.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is a home remedy for bacterial vaginosis. The pH level in a healthy vagina is between 3.8 and 4.5, which is acidic to control the growth of bacteria. So anything above 4.5 is not acidic enough to keep the unhealthy bacteria in check. A pH greater than 4.5 is indicates that the bacteria Lactobacillus, which produces acid, has been reduced somehow. The result is that bacterial vaginosis is able to manifest, since Lactobacillus is what keeps bacteria in check.

The reason why apple cider vinegar is used as a remedy is because it’s more acidic, especially when diluted. In theory, it’s designed to help return the pH back to normal levels.

Apple cider vinegar can be added to a warm bath to clean bacteria from the exterior. Be sure to clean out the tub first before taking a bath. All you need to do is add 2-3 cups of apple cider vinegar and soak for around 20 minutes or so. The water will be acidic, which should provide some relief to the vaginal area.

However, increasing the acidity of the pH alone won’t necessarily do the trick. The normal bacteria that combats bacterial vaginosis, Lactobacillus, needs to be restored to normal levels. Apple cider can be consumed as well by mixing 2 ounces with 6 ounces of water. It must be well diluted for it to be effective.

Apple cider vinegar alone won’t cure bacterial vaginosis, but what it can do is provide some relief from inflammation and itching. However, when used with other home remedies, it can be more powerful and give better results.

What’s beneficial about this home remedy for bacterial vaginosis is that it’s easy to obtain, inexpensive, and has no side effects. In essence, you have nothing to lose when using it. Plus, it can be applied on a daily basis over a consistent period of time.

With apple cider vinegar, less is more. You don’t need to poor a bunch into your bath for it to work. In fact, the more you put in, the less effective it is. You don’t want it to be too strong, as doing so won’t help the pH lower again.

This is a very easy remedy to take. Any women with bacterial vaginosis should give this a try. You have nothing to lose at all as long as you use it properly.

Boric Acid Suppositories

boric-acid-safe-chronic-yeast-infections

Boric acid suppositories and bacterial vaginosis have a history together. They have been used as a treatment for bacterial vaginosis, yeast infections, and to regulate pH levels for quite some time. Boric acid has antifungal and antiseptic properties that fight against bacteria.

A study compared the topic treatment with boric acid compared to oral treatment with itraconazole, which is an antifungal drug. 22 women who had a recurring yeast infection were given both treatments. The conclusion was that the boric acid was every bit as effective as itraconazole.

In another study, boric acid suppositories were proven to be more effective than fluconazole, which is an oral medication. Yeast Arrest is a product that contains herbs and boric acid.

The normal pH for the vagina is 3.8 to 4.5, and bacterial vaginosis causes the pH to increase above 4.5. To cure the condition, the pH must return to normal levels. When boric acid suppositories are applied to the vagina, it causes the environment to become acidic, which is conducive towards reducing bacteria. The general guidelines are to take boric acid suppositories for 10 days, once in the morning and at night, or take it for two weeks only once per day. A recurring infection might require taking it for another week or two.

It can potentially cause side effects, such as burning and irritation in the vagina. Not all patients however will experience these, but you should always consult your doctor first before taking this treatment. Boric acid can also eliminate some of the good bacteria along with the bad.

Boric acid is toxic, and therefore should not be taken internally. It also shouldn’t be used if you have any open wounds or cuts, as well as when you’re pregnant. A pharmacist will prepare capsules if the pharmacy doesn’t have them.

If you decide to take boric acid suppositories for BV, then it’s best not have sexual intercourse during that time. You could pass on the condition to your partner, and eventually they could pass it back to you.

Goldenseal

Goldenseal

Goldenseal is a herbal remedy that has shown to be an effective treatment for bacterial vaginosis. It has medicine properties that are used to cure a variety of physical ailments. Because it has antimicrobial effects, it dramatically reduces the amount of intestinal bacteria. It helps mucous flow more easily through the mouth and stomach, and therefore acts like a natural antibiotic. It helps to cleanse the body and treat infections that stem from fungus. They promote the flow of digestive enzymes and bile, which in turn helps the spleen and liver function properly.

Goldenseal serves as a natural treatment for sinus, mount, stomach, mucus membrane, throat, urinary tract, intestines, and vaginal infections. Other conditions such as the flu, colds, bladder infections, and wound healing benefit from Goldenseal.

Goldenseal is primary marketed nowadays for treating upset stomachs, enhancing digestion, and fighting against bacteria. Bacterial Vaginosis

Goldenseal for bacterial vaginosis works because it has anti-inflammatory, laxative, antimicrobial, and immune-boosting properties. Berberine is a chemical in this herb that has proven to effectively combat Candida fungus and bacteria that can be found in the mucous membranes of the vagina. Herbalists advise an intake of two 500-milligram capsules of Goldenseal once or twice per day until symptoms disappear.

The powder form comes at a premium since Goldenseal is almost an extinct plant. You can buy it in capsules, tablets, glycerites, and liquid extracts. It’s also used often with another herb called echinacea.Safety

Goldenseal should not be taken for longer than one week at a time. Pregnant women should not take Goldenseal for bacterial vaginosis or any other condition. This is because berberine, a primary element, is thought to result in uterine contractions and raise bilirubin levels. Anyone with high blood pressure should avoid Goldenseal, and those who have heart conditions shouldn’t take it unless under the supervision of a health professional.

It’s still unknown how safe it is for children and those with liver disease. While side effects are not common, they can include nausea, mouth irritation, digestive problems, and heightened nervousness.

Lactobacillus Acidophilus

Lactobacillus Acidophilus

Lactobacilli are bacteria typically found to reside in the vagina and small intestine. For years, women have taken supplements and yogurt containing Lactobacillus acidophilus in an effort to cure their bacterial vaginosis. Experts have discovered though that dairy lactobacillus is different than the kind found in the vagina. Because of this, it’s not an effective treatment. There are two types of lactobacillus in particular however that are contained in a healthy vagina: L. crispatus and L. jensenii. These two are placed in lactobacillus acidophilus capsules that you see today.

Lactobacillus acidophilus is a healthy form of bacteria that has shown to be effective as a bacterial vaginosis treatment. It’s also beneficial for regulating the immune system.

Why exactly does lactobacillus acidophilus for bacterial vaginosis work? BV develops because of a lack of Lactobacillus, so taking this natural remedy will increase the supply of this healthy bacteria. The result is that it will fight against the unhealthy bacteria that is in abundance.

Does it work for everyone? There is no remedy for bacterial vaginosis that works for everyone. If there was, no one would have BV. However, because it’s a natural remedy, it’s not very expensive and has a very low risk of causing side effects. So if nothing else, it can’t hurt.

Vaginal suppositories are a way to use lactobacillus as a treatment. As mentioned, they can be taken oraly in the form of capsules as well. The average dosage is taking capsules that have in the range of 1-10 billion Lactobacillus acidophilus. If you take more than necessary, then it could cause complications. Not taking enough might not be strong enough to treat the condition effectively. When using as a suppository, insert the tablet 1-2 times per day into the vagina.

Side effects are possible, but not common. A burning sensation as well as discomfort in the abdominal area have been reported side effects.

Monistat

Monistat is effective for proliferate infections, such as yeast infections, because it’s an anti-fungal. However, it’s not suited to treat bacterial vaginosis. In fact, it could actually make it worse since it can further mess with the balance of the bacteria in the vagina. One reason why women with bacterial vaginosis may find relief with Monistat is because it could relieve some of the pain that is associated with yeast infections as well.

Yeast infections are caused by an overgrowth of Candida Albicans, which is a fungus found in the vagina, and bacterial vaginosis is caused by an overgrowth of bacteria. Often times, these two conditions get mixed up.

Yeast infections can be caused by hormonal changes, pregnancy, poor diet, lack of sleep, and stress. Symptoms include pain during sex, vaginal swelling, burning, redness, a vaginal discharge, and soreness.

Bacterial vaginosis results when the balance of bacteria in the vagina is disrupted for any number of reasons, including hormonal changes, pregnancy, and even stress. This imbalance involves the bad bacteria outnumbering the healthy bacteria, which allows it to grow and take over.

An exact cause of bacterial vaginosis is not yet known. But risk factors include douching, sex with multiple partners, and taking antibiotics. Because it’s often asymptomatic, it’s not easy to diagnose. Though, like yeast infections the presence of a white discharge can be a symptom, though for some it’s yellow.

The discharge is one reason why women sometimes confuse one condition for another.

If you aren’t sure which condition you have, then the first step is to get diagnosed by a doctor. As mentioned, taking a treatment for a condition you don’t have can really make matters worse.

Yogurt is a wonderful treatment to start with. It’s completely natural, inexpensive, and has proven to get results. See more about the best treatment for bacterial vaginosis.

To summarize, Monistat is not a treatment for bacterial vaginosis. But there are other ways besides antibiotics to treat BV, though one may eventually have to resort to them if the condition is severe enough.

RepHresh

RepHresh is a brand that sells numerous feminine products, including a vaginal gel, tampons, a probiotic feminine supplement, a conditioning gel, and a vaginal moisturizer. RepHresh for bacterial vaginosis is the probiotic called Pro-B. It comes in capsule form, and is designed to balance bacteria and yeast to provide relief. One capsule can be taken each day to keep the natural bacteria at normal levels. The product contains lactobacillus, which is the natural bacteria that helps keep everything in order. RepHresh Pro-B

Bacterial vaginosis, as you might already know, occurs when the bacteria in your vagina is not balanced. What Pro-B does then is balance this out by providing more healthy bacteria into the body to fight against the overgrowth of harmful bacteria.

RepHresh recommends taking Pro-B everyday to help maintain balance, which fluctuates quite often during the course of a month.

What perhaps separates RepHresh for bacterial vaginosis as opposed to other probiotics is that it has two strains of lactobacillus that improve the health of the vagina. These strains have been clinically tested and RepHresh owns the patent for each. A product that contains a probiotic must have active live cultures in order to provide benefits. Some lactobacillus supplements and probiotics don’t have this, and therefore are beneficial against bacterial vaginosis.

According to RepHresh, you can begin seeing results within a week.

What Is A Probiotic?

As mentioned, Pro-B is an probiotic. You have certainly heard of antibiotics, especially if you have bacterial vaginosis. Antibiotics are anti-life, meaning they try to treat a condition by killing the harmful bacteria. Therefore, the opposite of antibiotics is probiotics, which means that it provides more bacteria into the body that promotes growth. Antibiotics kill both good and bad bacteria, while probiotics simply add to the good bacteria in an attempt to create more balance. Once balanced, the bacterial vaginosis condition is cured.

With any bacterial vaginosis treatment, there is mixed results. The consensus is that it can provide quick relief, but isn’t a cure long-term. A few women said that it did relief symptoms for weeks or even a month, but that the symptoms came back. That is why RepHresh recommends taking a capsule each day to maintain balance. Also, some women stated that it helped more when bacterial vaginosis was in the early stages.

For a box of 30 capsules, the price ranges from $25 to $40 depending on where you buy it from.

RepHresh also has a vaginal gel that is designed to maintain vaginal pH, and ultimately reduces risk for vaginal infections.
